Dr. Susan White is Professor and Doddridge Saxon Chair in Clinical Psychology at The University of Alabama, where she directs the Center for Youth Development and Intervention (CYDI). Her research spans multiple areas in developmental psychopathology, with primary focus on mechanism-driven intervention for co-occurring and core problems in autism.
She is dedicated to the dissemination and implementation of clinical science and evidence-based practice to diverse and underserved communities. She has worked in private practice and in residential inpatient settings, cementing her belief in the importance of research and evidence-based practice being mutually informative. As faculty at UA, she regularly provides community-based workshops and in-services for local schools and mental health agencies. She has been recognized publicly for her dedication to mentoring and inclusive education efforts. She is also a Fellow of the Association for Behavioral and Cognitive Therapies (ABCT), the American Psychological Association (APA), and Division 53 of APA, the Society of Clinical Child and Adolescent Psychology (SCCAP). Dr. White is also board-certified in Clinical Child and Adolescent Psychology.
Her research has been funded by the National Institutes of Health, the US Department of Defense, and several foundations. She is co-author of several treatment curricula for youth with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) including the Emotion Awareness and Skills Enhancement (EASE) Program, and developer of the Multimodal Anxiety and Social Skills Intervention (MASSI) and Stepped Transition in Education Program for Students with ASD (STEPS). She is also widely published in high-impact scientific journals and has authored or co-edited several books, including the Oxford Handbook of Clinical Child and Adolescent Psychology.
She is committed to service both in the university and to the field broadly. She is a standing member of the Child Psychopathology and Developmental Disabilities study section of the NIH. She has served as Associate Editor for the Journal of Clinical Child and Adolescent Psychology since 2016, and she was Associate Editor of the Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders for six years. She is on the editorial boards of Evidence-Based Practice in Child and Adolescent Mental Health, Autism: The International Journal of Research and Practice, Clinical Child and Family Psychology Review, and the Review Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders. Dr. White is also actively involved in several organizations. She is the Coordinator of the ABCT Publications Committee, and she previously chaired ABCT’s Public Education and Media Dissemination Committee, founded and co-chaired the Autism Spectrum and Developmental Disorders Special Interest Group. She was inaugural editor of the Oxford clinical practice series, ABCT Series on Implementation of Clinical Approaches, which supports practice-based implementation of the Treatments that Work series.
In addition to her scholarly work, Dr. White is a dedicated teacher and mentor. She received the 2019 Mentor Award, nominated by several prior and current students, from the ABCT Autism Special Interest Group. She was also inducted as an honorary member of the UA Mortar Board in 2020, nominated for this recognition by her students.
Dr. White's interests outside of work include running and other forms of exercise (eg, pilates, weight training), reading, supporting environmental protection efforts, and helping with Boy Scouts of America.
